FIRST November Reading Celebration

FIRST November Reading Celebration
Posted on 12/22/2022
BooksAfter many years of starting the school year with school-wide book clubs, VLUS educators and students gathered together to discuss a second round of books for the first time this November.

Each spring, the VLUS ELA team creates a Summer Book List to share with incoming students. Educators and students select books to read from the list and then receive copies of the books they selected before they leave for summer vacation.

This year, for the first time, educators and students selected a second book from the VLUS Summer Book List and read their books in the fall. On November 30th, all educators and students met and discussed their books in over 30 small book groups in classrooms throughout the school.

Several Vassal Lane students enjoyed exchanging ideas about what books to read next with other members of their book groups at the end of their discussions. Book groups had a mix of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students, giving everyone a chance to get to know one another a little better outside of their regular classroom schedules and groupings.

Two popular books on the Vassal Lane Summer Book List were Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. In addition, many students enjoyed a graphic nonfiction title on the VLUS Book List, Dogs of War by Shelia Keenan.

The Vassal Lane school-wide book clubs provide a valuable opportunity to strengthen and celebrate our school’s growing community of readers!
