From the Head of Upper School

Families of Vassal Lane Upper School,

It is nearing the end of a busy summer and I am excited to open the doors and welcome our students to the 2017-18 school year! Below are some important announcements regarding the start of year.

There have been some staffing changes at VLUS and I want to introduce you to the newest members of our instructional team:

  • 8th Grade Math--Sarah Steward: Sarah moves from her role as our Math Interventionist and into the position of 8th Grade Math teacher. She brings years of math teaching experience both here and elsewhere and she is looking forward to return to the classroom and to join the 8th grade team.

  • 6-8 Music/Chorus--Jenna Havelin: Jenna joins VLUS having previously been the Music and Choral teacher over the past seven years in the Arlington, MA Public Schools. In addition to her teaching, she has organized and conducted children’s choral ensembles, including work this past year with the Boston Children’s Chorus. We are thrilled to welcome Jenna to the VLUS team!

  • 6-8 Math Intervention--Kolleen Burbank: Formerly our 8th Grade ELA teacher, Kolleen returns to VLUS as our 6-8 Math Interventionist to VLUS after taking a year away to explore other opportunities. We are very excited to have her back!

  • 6-8 Sheltered English Immersion Program Paraprofessional--Wislande Pierre: We are very excited to welcome Wislande, who has worked at Graham & Parks for several years. She brings a wealth of experience and a very contagious spirit to the work with our SEI team.

  • 6-8 Building Substitute--David Borden: David joined VLUS last winter, taking over the Building Substitute position mid-year and we are happy to have his calm and positive presence return for this coming school year.

  • 6-8 French Substitute--Mimi LaPointe: We welcome Mimi as she fills in for Laura Sylvan, who is scheduled to return to VLUS in late January. Mimi is an experienced educator, most recently having taught French at CRLS.

  • School Nurse--Toya Scott: Toya Scott joins the VLUS/Tobin team as our school nurse, coming to us from Fletcher Maynard Academy. We are excited to have her here!

We will be holding our annual VLUS end-of-summer potluck on Thursday, August 31 between 4PM and 6PM. We will be gathering in the playground at the back of the school for food, drinks and fun. Teachers and teams will be present to meet incoming students and parents and to answer any pressing questions related to the start of the year. We hope to see you there.
