Mother Tongue Book ProjectVassal Lane Upper Campus 8th graders studying French worked with the Manténwa Community Learning Center (MCLC) in Haiti on the Mother Tongue Book Project. MCLC is a school in Haiti that is working to have all children learn to read in their mother tongue, which is Haitian-Creole, while continuing their study of French.

French teacher Laura Sylvan guided her students to write stories in English, translating them to French, and then to Creole. The students also created their own artwork for each book. The goal of this project was to give the students an enriching experience in using the French language as well as make connections with children and cultures other than their own. The French Cultural Center of Boston generously donated funds to print the books. The books will be on their way to the library at MCLC for the students to enjoy.
