On
the morning of Wednesday March 12, 2014, eighth grade French students
gathered in Madame Laura`s classroom. They were soon to depart for
Sandrine's, a French bistro in Harvard Square. Eighth graders walked
from Vassal Lane to 8 Holyoke Street, where Sandrine’s is located. Upon
arriving at Sandrine's, the students sat down, and placed orders for
their meals. Although Madame Laura hoped that the students would be able
to speak French with the staff, it turned out that only one of the
waiters spoke French, which limited the students ability to place orders
in French.
There were three menu items available to the students: Chicken,
Ravioli, or a Sandwich (the sandwich and chicken came with frites, which
were served as they are in France with aioli-not catsup). The students
had around an hour and a half to eat, which is an eternity compared to
Vassal Lane`s ten minute lunchtime.
Madame Laura was enthusiastic about this, saying that “It was great
to get a taste of French culture, sitting for over one hour instead of
ten minutes.” The students were generally pleased with the food,
especially the frites, although one sleuth said that he was disappointed
that there was a microwave in the kitchen, which he contended was used
for reheating the frites. Another student described the food as “good,
but nothing special”. There was a general consensus among the student
population that the trip was very enjoyable!
