The
Seventh Grade Portfolio Breakfast was held on Wednesday, January 29.
Despite the chill in the air on that winter morning, many families came
to the 8AM event, many bearing breakfast items for the enjoyment of all.
This was an event for parents to see what their child has worked on so
far this year, and to also eat some breakfast with the other parents.
The Seventh Graders had binders with 5 different sections: ELA, Social
Studies, Math, Science, and their World Language, which is either
Spanish or French. In those sections, each student had to include
certain required pieces of work, and some work of their choice. A
student could highlight, for instance, an essay which that student had
worked hard on, a test with a good grade, or a packet with his/her best
work in it. For each class, the student had written about one of the
highlighted projects: a reflection on one piece of his or her work.
Many students included as part of their portfolios their ELA project called LALs - Letters About Literature.
This is a program organized by the Massachusetts Center for the Book.
The program asks students to write letters to authors (living or
otherwise) whose work has made a significant difference in their lives.
Nia Abdurezak wrote to contemporary author John Greene about his book
The Fault in our Stars. Peter Laskin wrote to Ray Bradbury, not about
any particular book, but about how Bradbury’s writing has been an
influence.
“It was wonderful to see everyone sharing their work with their
families” said Seventh Grade Math teacher Elsa Head. Seventh Grader
Sophie Wright’s father, who enjoyed watching the Seventh Grade’s robot
project in action, remarked that he was amazed by what the kids were
doing in Science.
