Ice SkatingDespite the rain and wind, the 7th Graders had a blast on their ice skating trip the day before winter break.

Students have officially launched their work with the Stories of Persecution Project! This exciting and dynamic project moves between the ELA and social studies classes from now through the beginning of May. For this project, each student chooses an individual who has experienced persecution, shown perseverance, and about whom they are deeply interested. Through different phases of the project, students will learn as much as they can about their research subject's life and share that understanding through an oral presentation, a formal research paper, and ultimately the development of a dramatic monologue.

As you talk with the 7th graders in your life, you can help by asking questions and engaging conversations about their research subjects. Sharing your own knowledge and insight is always helpful as well. Because students will share much of their understanding in spoken presentations, having a chance to talk informally about their learning is a great way for them to evaluate what they already know and where they might need to learn more, while building confidence in their discussion skills. Some questions to ask include:

  • Tell me about your research subject. What parts of their story are especially interesting to you?
  • How did or does the time, place, or situation in which your research subject lived or lives shape their life?
  • What questions about your research subject are you wondering or researching now?
