VLUS Learning Commons Mission Statement
The mission of the Learning Commons located at the Vassal Lane Upper School is to empower our scholars to become critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and responsible and creative digital citizens. With the collaborative support of classroom teachers, the Vassal Lane learning commons provides students with opportunities to locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from books, websites, databases, video, and audio media. In accordance with this mission, the Library Technology Specialist and classroom teachers provide students with instruction on evaluating and citing sources. The Library Technology Specialist and teachers also teach scholars how to use the technologies that captivate their interest and enhance their learning more efficiently and effectively.

The Learning Commons and the VLUS classrooms are places where scholars can collaborate with peers while exploring a wide variety of reading materials and digital environments. Our Learning Commons’ shelves contain a growing collection of popular and award-winning titles in both print and audio formats. The nine iMacs located in the Learning Commons provide students with a place to explore the library catalog, to access the outstanding online resources provided by Cambridge Public Schools, to learn basic programming skills using programs such as Scratch, and to access the Internet in order to complete school related assignments.

VLUS Learning Commons Expectations for Student Behavior
Scholars are reminded to turn in an AUP before using the computers located both in the Learning Commons and throughout the school, and students are expected to adhere to the terms outlined in the AUP whenever they are using any of the computers located at the Vassal Lane Upper School.

Scholars who have passes are welcome to visit the VLUS library throughout the day. Teachers must call or email the Library Technology Specialist before sending students to the library. Scholars are also expected to adhere to the terms of the VLUS Social Contract at all times, and they are encouraged to share their views on literature and technology.
