In social studies, students are wrapping up their study of human origins, learning about race as a human idea and skin color as DNA-determined over thousands of years. We will proceed to study the rise of agriculture, "from foragers to farmer: good idea, bad idea", and on to Mesopotamia. Students will be attending a field trip to the Peabody and Semitic Museums in two groups: January 18 and January 22. Permission slips will be sent home shortly. We would appreciate family chaperones, so if you can donate your morning, we would appreciate your presence. We will let you know which day your child is scheduled to attend the field trip.

In math, students are working to create mini lessons around one math concept that they have learned this school year. A project rubric was given to each student to be their criteria of success. Students use Google Slides to create a lesson that they can present and teach. Every student shows different levels of creativity and marvelous work and effort.

Students in the SEI program will take the ACCESS test this month. The ACCESS is a state test that assesses students' listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. It is important for students to get a good night's sleep and eat breakfast before these tests. Students will take tests on the following dates: Tuesday 1/15, Wednesday 1/16, Thursday 1/17, Tuesday 1/22 and Wednesday 1/23. Thank you for your continued support!

In ELA, students are revising and reflecting on the experience of writing realistic fiction. They chose to write about a wide variety of social issues, from bullying to racism, divorce, friendship, transgender experiences, and Islamophobia. They worked on credible resolutions, and the nitty-gritty of dialogue punctuation. Students will begin a nonfiction reading unit and explore a topic they are passionate about through nonfiction reading.
