Garden Update
This is the image for the news article titled Garden Update

It’s that time of year again. The leaves are almost gone, the air is cold, and the plants have “gone to sleep.” We are thankful for the mild weather that has allowed us to harvest cherry tomatoes almost until Halloween! So it goes, all things must pass, and now, winter is coming. We’ve had a brief but wonderful growing season at our school garden and are thrilled with how many students and teachers have enjoyed this beautiful space.

Although winter is arriving, this does not mean that our season is over. Thanks to the hard work of Vassal Lane students, we will continue to harvest greens such as kale, spinach, and lettuce, throughout the winter. You may have noticed the structures covering two of our garden beds. These are our hoop houses and they would not have been possible were it not for the engineers and builders of Vassal Lane. In the elective Food and the Future, students learned about cold hardy crops, the various forms of cold frames, and ultimately built their own hoop houses. Most recently, we harvested kale from our hoop houses and had our own Thanksgiving feast of kale salad. Students created their own dressing and included kohlrabi from the garden, apples, avocados, and pickled peppers in their final dish.

If any teacher is interested in utilizing the garden during the winter, or would like to collaborate on lessons for spring, please reach out to Greg. He is happy to help.

Thank you!
