From the Head of Upper School

Dear VLUS Families,

It was great to see so many of you here for our back to school night! If you were not able to join us please make sure to reach out to your student’s teachers to get information about curriculum and content.

We embrace a growth mindset at VLUS--for students and teachers alike. We believe that we can all learn and improve and the leadership teams at VLUS have worked hard to develop several important learning goals for the whole faculty. These goals are all connected to our School Improvement Plan goals as well as to the district’s strategic goals. Below are the areas that we are working on this year as part of our collective learning. These are in addition to department trainings, additional courses offered in district and any individual workshops or courses that teachers take part in.

Our Instructional Leadership Team is leading a process to develop a school-wide instructional framework for VLUS as well as to institute an instructional rounds process in which colleagues visit each others’ classes to begin to identify common areas of strength and common problems of practice.

Our Family Engagement Team is leading development on how to effectively partner with all families by developing systems for listening conferences and student-led conferences.

We are exploring work related to explicitly support the social and emotional growth of our students through trainings and workshops as a whole staff and in grade-level teams.

VLUS staff will begin to explore the intersections of race and schools, exploring these challenging and important issues through facilitated dialogue and workshops throughout the year.

We are excited about our learning plan for this year!

Mr. Coplon-Newfield
